When deciding which operating system is best for a particular
project, you need to know about the possible candidates, the comparative features of each,
and then match those features to the requirements of the project concerned. You don't just
pick one on a single (trivial) issue, such as `the market leader'. You wouldn't apply the
same process to choosing a motor vehicle, house, or other major purchase.
Linux and other open source software is not just for geeks, hackers,
hobbyists, or other users that you might associate with cheap software. The Internet and
the open source philosophy interact to produce some of the highest quality software
available.
The following references aim to show that Linux is a serious
computing platform which can be and is used by major organisations for mission critical
computing.
